Open Question: What kind of legal recourse do we have?

My wife and I have just been informed by Red Door Homes that our home cannot be built on the land we purchased because of a city ordinance regarding landlocked lots. Red Door inspected the sight, said everything was in order and we signed the paperwork to build, they began clearing the land (forested), graded, surveyed and marked the site, and then informed us they hadn't applied for the building permits yet. That's when we found out they can't get a permit. After we were contracted with Red Door we sold our current home and moved into an apartment to await our new home's completion within 6 months (time frame we were promised). Now they are canceling our contract and we're stuck without a home and piece of land we can't build anything on.
